The client – a software developer with a passion for all things medieval – wanted a timber framed great room (in the original sense of the phrase) that was manorial in look and feel. The frame is crafted of white oak with the darkest stain short of black paint that we could find.

The surface of the timbers is “curve planed”, a method of treating the surface of the timbers that mimics the appearance of hand hewing. Some of the upper story walls are infilled with brick, and solid oak carved griffins adorn the four corners of the room. Just because this home was avowedly Tudor in style didn’t mean that it couldn’t avail itself of modern building methods. The timber frame is enclosed in structural insulated panels helping to assure energy efficiency. The highlanders of Scotland would eat their hearts out.
