The stone walls of an old barn were used as the foundation of this addition to an already renovated farmhouse. Inside, the timber frame style is taken from the vocabulary of the utilitarian farm structures. An eye-catching copper chimney shroud rises from the fireplace to the ceiling, and the whole is topped by a cupola that allows light to stream in.
The roof boards are white pine tongue and groove with a white pickling stain. This and the cupola make the whole space feel lofty and bright. Other timber accents were added elsewhere in the house, and barn boards were used as wainscoting throughout. A sliding barn door is used to seal the space off from the rest of the house.
