Whoever says that timber frames have to be given a natural finish might be persuaded otherwise by the bright interior of this Nantucket vacation home. The Nantucket building authorities are famously adamant that new construction honor the island’s long and illustrious architectural vernacular – hence the cedar shingles on both the roof and walls. The only concession to anything remotely alien is the low stone walls.

This frame was raised in the month of February on the north Atlantic coast, not a particularly hospitable time and place; we hit the best and only merciful week of good weather that winter. Iron tie rods span the lofty central living area. A second-floor bridge connects the bedrooms at both ends, as well as providing access to a ladder climbing to an interior crow’s nest and, from there, to a roof-top widow’s walk (not yet visible on our exterior views).
