The only section of this sprawling Eastern Shore home in Maryland in which we worked was the kitchen. Measuring in at just shy of 1,000 square feet, it is the largest residential kitchen we’ve encountered in the last three decades. It’s the room in the opening photograph showing a large rectangular chimney. The room, roofed by four king post trusses connected by purlins, is actually two mirror-image kitchens separated by a seating area and a fireplace. The owners both love to cook and entertain. The hanging light fixture in the three bays are actually halves of buoys and measure four feet across.

The entire house strives to create a feeling of openness and airiness so, towards that end, the white oak timbers and ceiling are whitewashed.
