Located in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, this community lodge in a 3.5 square mile privately-owned gated community set near two lakes (260 acres and 90 acres) and four beaches, was one of LCTF’s first glue-lam projects. The lodge is 17,500 square feet and our work consisted of the central lodge and the two wings. The two main longitudinal supporting girts (purlins) in the central lodge consisted of two members each that measure 8 ¾”thick by 45” high by 63’long. These pieces were too large to get into our shop so we had to have them trucked directly to the site and had to work on, and finish them, when we arrived with the completed load.

The fourteen trusses that sat on these huge girts had a rather unusual configuration in that they are comprised of two closely set queen posts and the lower chords are angled down at the same pitch that the upper chords angle up. The trusses in the two wings have a horizontal lower chord . The Douglas Fir glue-lam roof system consumed 291 timbers and totaled 55,000 board feet.

The only problem we encountered on this project was the intense severity of the weather. Snow was a constant while we were on site and the temperature was below 0 degrees each morning. In fact, with the 65’ pieces that we shipped directly to the site, we had to wait to stain them until the building was enclosed and heated.
